  • NRHA Hall of Fame Inductee Hollywood Dun It Passes Away

    (3/31/2005)

    by NRHA

Hollywood Dun It, the All Time Leading Sire in National Reining Horse Association history, was humanely put down on March 30. The beautiful 22-year-old buckskin stallion had been suffering from severe health problems escalated by his continuing battle with testicular cancer.

According to Tim and Colleen McQuay, who owned Hollywood Dun It along with partner Jennifer Easton, the decision to put him down was a difficult one. Tim noted, "He's been a part of our family, and a part of our lives, for a lot of years. None of us wanted him to suffer." Colleen McQuay added, "I don't know if we'll ever be able to stand to put another horse in that stall."

Hollywood Dun It's name has become synonymous with Reining in the past 20 years and he has broken every National Reining Horse Association siring record. When the 2004 NRHA Futurity & North American Affiliate Championship Show came to a close, his foals had carried him past the Four Million Dollar Sire pinnacle.

Representatives of Hollywood Dun It's thirteen foal crops have won the NRHA Futurity, NRHA Derby and Superstakes, the National Reining Breeders Classic, All American Quarter Horse Congress Futurity, Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity, the Tradition Futurity and numerous other prestigious events. They've qualified and won Gold medals in United States Equestrian Team competition and earned American Quarter Horse Association World Championships as well. They've also excelled outside of the Reining discipline, earning a Non Pro Reserve Championship at the National Reined Cow Horse Association World Championship Snaffle Bit Futurity and NRCHA World Championship. They've collected National Cutting Horse Association dollars and there are even Champion roping and driving Hollywood Dun Its!

Tim and Colleen McQuay, as well as Jennifer Easton, have always been quick to thank the many owners and trainers who put their faith in Hollywood Dun It over the years. Tim noted, "This is a loss we share with owners and riders who have believed in Hollywood Dun It and in our program."

Hollywood Dun It was selected as the first Breyer Animal Creations reining horse in 1998, and in 2002 his son, Dun Gotta Gun, was also similarly honored as a Breyer collectible. The large volume of sales of the Hollywood Dun It model have resulted in it being declared a collectors' item and it has been taken off the production line.

In a January 2005 NRHA press release noting his latest accomplishment it was noted -

Hollywood Dun It is true ambassador for the sport of Reining and a household name throughout the performance horse industry, Hollywood Dun It's accomplishments as a sire are a result of his offspring's talent, athleticism, and great minds. To date, Hollywood Dun It offspring have earned more than $4,036,000 in NRHA events. Their success transcends every NRHA Category, division, and event. From Rookies to Non Pros to Million Dollar Riders, the Dun Its are appreciated by reiners worldwide, part of personal resumes, scrapbooks, and NRHA history.

As a tribute to those supporters and to the legendary stallion himself, a new Hollywood Dun It award will be established in his honor. Details will be announced soon.

Hollywood Dun It stood at McQuay Stables in Tioga, Texas, and was the senior sire in a stallion lineup that includes four of his sons, NRHA Futurity Reserve Co-Champion Dun It With A Twist, two-time NRBC Champion Reminic N Dun It, USEF Championship Reining Qualifier Dun Gotta Gun and Saddlesmith Open Champion Footworks Finest., along with NRHA Futurity and Derby Champion RR Star. The National Reining Horse Association is the governing body of the sport of Reining. NRHA is responsible for promoting the sport and working to ensure the highest standards of competition. With corporate support from Rocky Mountain Clothing Company, Cowboy Central, Horse & Rider magazine, Markel Insurance, Oklahoma City Convention & Visitors Bureau, Quarter Horse News, Kiser Arena Specialists, Houston Embryo Transfer Center, Classic Equine, Bloomer Trailer Mfg., Leddy's Cowboy Tack, John Vance Auto Group, LaQuinta Inns and LaQuinta Inn & Suites, The Rider's Edge, Purina Mills LLC (the official United States feed sponsor of the NRHA), and Anderson Bean Boot Company, the NRHA continues to educate its members and the public about Reining.
